Conners and Conaway Bill Would Maintain Benefit for Disabled Veterans and Alleviate Costs for Municipalities and Property Taxpayers

Delran – State Assemblymen Jack Conners and Herb Conaway, MD (D- Burlington/Camden) announced today new legislation that would reimburse towns for the costs absorbed by the property tax exemption for 100% disabled veterans.

Currently, under state law, veterans who have been honorably discharged and deemed to be 100% service-related permanently disabled by the VA are exempt from paying property taxes.  The result has been that municipalities absorb the cost of this benefit, which increases the property tax levy for other homeowners and may affect local services.

The bill, which was drafted this week and will be introduced when the legislature next reconvenes, would require the State to reimburse municipalities for the property taxes of the qualified veterans.
